Achieving Hospitality Design: The Artistry of a More Hospitable Process

Workshop Presentation
Glenn NP Nowak

Hospitality, often associated with the tourism, entertainment, and dining industries among others, provides an opportunity to revisit the origins of the concept of “radical hospitality” as described by Jacques Derrida in his Philosophy of Hospitality. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to strive toward radical hospitality by de-emphasizing the creation of an art piece and embracing the empathetic connections with fellow workshop attendees, a skill transferable with students and with the wider community. Informed by nearly two decades of studio design teaching, this session invites interactive participation in an attempt to embody the art of hospitality rather than aiming to achieve a kind of artistic masterpiece. The workshop enables the testing of key strategies and their efficacy within the initial steps of project conception. Members of the audience will come away with tools to share with their clients, communities, and classrooms.
