Abstract
During this sessioj attendees will learn about and participate in a hands-on visual art workshop initially completed by the presenters with students in an undergraduate Disability Studies course. The students were active participants throughout the visual art creation process resulting in deep reflections about several societal issues. Art-based concepts relate to realizing the role of the process versus the product and interrogating attachment to visual art creation. The workshop also traverses reflective concepts exploring current societal approaches to equitable issues and how power constructs in society can be upended and recreated. Belonging, inclusion, and interrogation of the status quo for disabled people were implications that stemmed from participating in the workshop. Attendees in this presentation will listen to a summary of the art workshop, then engage in creating abstract visual art with several mediums and engage in a collaborative transformative activity to create a collaborative art piece. This workshop will conclude with a reflection activity to deconstruct how attendee’s preconceived notions have shifted and engage with the emotional and academic aspects of the workshop procedures.
