Lockean and Hegelian Theories of Property and the Imperfect Duty to Contribute to the Digital Commons

Abstract

I present the central content of a pair of complementary articles recently published in Information, Medium & Society (Volume 23, Issues 1 and 2, 2025). In the articles, I expose inbuilt problems with strong claims to private intellectual property from Lockean and Hegelian perspectives, respectively. As a result of these problems, I argue that that all able creators have an imperfect moral duty to contribute to the digital commons. My review consists of a brief summary of the critical position taken in response to each theory.
