Massaging the Margins through Found Poetry View Digital Media

Workshop Presentation
Teng Hong Lim,  Joanne Pang

In 1964, Marshall McLuhan coined the term “The Medium Is the Message” advocating how our senses are altered and perception shaped by the communication medium itself. The workshop investigates how existing margins can be used as interactive/engaging/fluid mediums to reconstruct new meanings. Attendees are given a section of text sourced from newspapers, recipes, instruction manuals and tasked to reinterpret the content through the use of annotation, doodling, mark-making and obscuring. They will use different mediums such as ink, tape, highlighters on transparency. In this workshop, attendees will be encouraged to see beyond the immediate and obvious through the process of developing a personal response to the given content. By working together, the layered outcomes will spark new perspectives and visual dialogues. The 3 takeaways for attendees are 1. Increase visual analysis skills 2. Discover the connections between the medium and the message 3. Organic exchanges amidst visual dialogues.
