Workshop "Tools and Transformations: Navigating Human-AI Interactions Through a Cultural Lens"
Can technological capabilities coexist with cultural preservation? What role might inclusive datasets and design practitioners play in the future of AI? Human ingenuity and creativity remain fundamental to problem-solving and innovation. As generative AI systems become increasingly integrated into creative processes, their impact on diverse cultural approaches to innovation merits deeper examination. This study explores the intersection and contradiction of human creativity and AI-generated solutions through the lens of Jugaad—an Indian approach to frugal innovation characterized by resourcefulness and adaptability. Jugaad is a grassroots innovation that resists and challenges the capitalist restrictions on our creativity. It demonstrates joy within restrictions, where scarcity leads to innovation. Using jugaad as a critical lens in a conversational format, this session questions whether Anglo-centric AI frameworks developed in the Global North influence creative practices in the Global South. It aims to investigate how contemporary technological tools might shape our understanding of innovation and creativity across cultural perspectives. We consider these questions: How might we preserve human ingenuity and decenter the Anglo-centric technological conversations to include the past, present, and future of the Global South in the conversation of AI? What strategies can we implement to ensure AI development reflects and incorporates diverse technological traditions and knowledge systems?
