Modelling Innovation: Cognitive Models, Diagrams, and the “Forcing” of Change

Abstract

By drawing on some of the most recent literature on the critical and philosophical use of “models” in the theorisation of the nature of cognition - and particularly from a “4E” or “Enactive, Embodied, Embedded,” and Extended” point of view - along with Fabien Muniesa’s work on the “Performativity” of economic modelling, and Alain Badiou and Armand Hatchuell concept of “Forcing” in concept and design innovation, this paper discusses the use of “models” in the business innovation mentoring and coaching of over 200 SMEs in the UK as part of Arts Council England’s and the British Library’s “Get ready for Growth: Igniting Creativity Across the Nation”.
