Beyond the Screen - Dismantling Digital Labor Inequalities
Blanca Lozano Navarro
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study examines the interaction of technological transformation and neoliberal policies in shaping gender-based labour inequalities within Europe. The rise of the 'gig economy' has introduced new forms of labour commodification—such as crowdwork—raising questions about mechanisms of exploitation beyond digital precarity, which disproportionately affects women. While crowdwork promises flexibility and autonomy, it has reinforced unstable working conditions, particularly in feminised sectors. Regulation Theory provides a framework to examine labour market changes driven by three decades of deregulation. This research explores how digital platforms reconfigure labour relations, reinforcing principles of Western societies that instrumentalize the human body, especially female bodies, for capital. Through a comparative analysis of Spain, France, Germany, and Sweden, the analysis reveals how various normative frameworks address the commodification of platform labour. Key institutional factors—such as algorithmic regulation, labour classification, and social protection policies—are identified as mitigating or exacerbating gender inequalities. Using a mixed-methods approach and a digital precarity index, platforms are classified into three types: (1) offshored skilled labour; (2) unskilled on-site labour; (3) feminised labour, where market logics commodify care roles. Findings reveal an increasingly precarious labour system characterized by low wages, irregular hours, overwork, social isolation, and lack of social protection. Additionally, platform labour practices also reinforce gender subordination through algorithmic control. Overall, this research deepens understanding of weaknesses in the new work organization and legal loopholes surrounding it. It emphasizes the need for innovative regulatory frameworks to address the growing commodification of work in the digital economy while promoting workers' rights and gender equity.
Overlapping Identities

This paper explores the complex matter of defining the Montenegrin diasporic identity within the context of Montenegro’s multi-ethnic composition and in regard to its diaspora engagement policy. It does so by drawing inspiration from the Scottish diaspora and the Scottish Government’s recent diaspora engagement strategy. Our work addresses the challenge posed by migrants from Montenegro who, while originating from the country, more often than not identify with their specific ethnic diasporas (Montenegrin, Serb, Bosnian Albanian, Croatian), rather than a unified diaspora of Montenegro. Similarly, Scotland must deal with a diaspora that draws upon a very broad range of history and competing senses of identity and belonging, yet for the Scottish diaspora, there is no Scottish state or citizenship. Thus, these examples of Montenegro and Scotland present a key definitional problem, albeit a mirror of each other. Therefore, this research investigates this national identity division within the diaspora of Montenegro, examining the historical, social, and political factors contributing to these distinct identifications, including questions of national belonging and historical narratives. Our paper aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of what constitutes the Montenegrin diaspora in its various forms and based on this analysis, proposes more inclusive potential governmental definitions and policies. Our proposals would allow Montenegro to acknowledge and recognise the varied ethnic and national identities of its diaspora, with its broader spectrum of connection to the homeland, and further allow a more productive and fruitful engagement with those diverse, worldwide, diaspora communities.
A Theory-driven Learning Analytic Model for Detecting Students-at-risk in Higher Education
Sonwabo Jongile,
Eunice Ivala
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Business intelligence (BI) and analytic solutions originated from learning analytics (LA), which has emerged in the education sector due to the success of data mining models in businesses. However, the application of BI models in analytics for at-risk students (those failing academically or facing challenges that may hinder their completion of studies) is currently unclear in the global higher education context. LA is being tested and implemented in some higher education institutions (HEI) worldwide to enhance learning and teaching through monitoring students’ interactions and success in fully online and blended courses. Furthermore, most studies on LA are data-driven and lack theoretical foundations. This study, from which the findings in this article are derived, is based on Tinto’s longitudinal model of dropout. This model is used to select dropout conditions and extract data from institutional information systems and student learning data, with the goal of improving the identification of at-risk students and providing real-time interventions. Through an inductive analysis of literature, this article explores how theoretical frameworks can be applied in analytics for at-risk students, with a focus on predictive modeling. As a result, a modified theoretical model based on Tinto’s longitudinal model of dropout is presented. This modified model aims to demonstrate the potential of information systems and student learning data in indigenous HEI, providing a learning analytic approach that universities can use to identify students at risk of dropping out.
Image of Women and National Identity in Türkiye’s Public Urban History

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) founded the new, secular Republic of Türkiye in 1923. Among the most important initiatives of the Kemalist national program in the early years of the Republic was the construction of the new capital, Ankara. During these formative years, a massive architectural urbanization and modernism program was implemented, visually distancing the nascent Republic from its recent past (Değirmenci, 2022). The history and story of the newly established nation-state have been transmitted from generation to generation through different elements of public history, such as museums, monuments, and statues on the streets. In this context, this paper investigates how women belonging to the Turkish nation have been represented from past to present and how this gendered national identity is constructed through representations in the example of Ankara City. The data of this study, which is based on qualitative research methodology, consists of sculptures, monuments, and museums in Ankara. The data is analyzed through content analysis and social semiotic analysis. As a result of the study, it was observed that women were depicted within the framework of traditional roles such as motherhood and wifehood and as active fighters in the Turkish War of Independence, a significant and empowering role in Turkish history. It was also found that womanhood was associated with pride, dignity, determination, freedom, and cultural development. It is also understood that a particular emphasis was placed on women's role in nation-building and constructing the modern Turkish nation through representation through elements of public history.
