Digital Age and Sustainability within Ammatoa Kajang Indigenous Community

Abstract

Ammatoa Kajang Indigenous Community in Bulukumba Regency of Indonesia has acquired international and national recognitions for its forest control making it a model of traditional-based forest management. However, clashes with the oil palm industry over its land tenure caused them to reject modernity and technology attached to digital development. Limited to technology for education, the rejection to modernization is questioned as it does not originate from the natural process of traditional necessity. This condition is believed to be an alert in their sustainability as an Indigenous community. This paper is conducted by participatory observations and analysed qualitatively focusing on the modernity and modernization rejection initiative amid unavoidable technological development of the digital era. It shows that albeit the option to accept technology for youngers’ education is risky to their traditional life and practices, maintaining adherence to ‘Pasang ri Kajang’ is a key success to sustainability of the digital era. Cultural exchanges, a legal framework, and educational approaches are still needed to be aligned for economic and social growth.
