Abstract
Community-based tourism (CBT) is no longer a new concept having its origins in the Caribbean (Jamaica) in 1978. Since then CBT has grown in popularity and it is currently a consistently present type of tourism around the world. Community-based tourism presents specific principles and characteristics that distinguish this type of tourism from others. At the same time, contemporary tourism has evolved and has become a complex ‘ensemble’ of various components and associated trends most, notably tourism demand, types of tourism(s) and global and local issues. This conceptual research attempts to position CBT in a contemporary tourism context, illustrating its relationship with tourism demand, other types of tourism, including global and local issues such as technology and sustainability. The specific characteristics of CBT such as local ownership by disadvantaged community members and its redistributive intentions will also be considered and they will assist to elaborate the position of CBT in the contemporary tourism context. Given the recognized potential value and role of CBT it is important to well understand and define its position in contemporary tourism so as to be able to better understand and facilitate CBT development and expansion.
