Abstract
This paper critically examines the intersection of educational leadership, race, and historical prejudice in South Africa’s historically white schools, focusing on the experiences of principals of colour. Often the first in their roles, these leaders navigate systemic racism, entrenched stereotypes, and institutional resistance while striving to create inclusive and equitable educational spaces. Using qualitative research through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, the study explores the resilience of these principals as they confront unfounded criticisms questioning their competence and leadership. Findings reveal that, despite facing racism, sexism, and classism, these principals implement strategies to foster resilience and advance equity. Key approaches include cultivating supportive networks, advocating for culturally responsive pedagogy, and challenging exclusionary institutional norms. Their efforts contribute to transforming historically exclusive schools into more inclusive and representative learning environments. This study adds to discussions on leadership in historically divided educational institutions, aligning with themes of social change, identity formation, and transformative leadership. By centring the experiences of principals of colour, the paper calls for a reimagining of educational leadership—one that prioritizes student-centred, culturally responsive approaches essential for adaptive, forward-thinking schools. Furthermore, this work underscores the role of educational administrators in shaping policies and leadership practices that advance equity, decolonization, and curriculum transformation. Through the lived experiences of these leaders, the study offers insight into how educational organizations can drive social change, fostering inclusive leadership models suited to the evolving demands of a diverse and dynamic society.
