Bridging the AI Knowledge Gap: The Urgent Need for AI Literacy and Institutional Support

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in institutions of higher learning has prompted an immediate demand for AI literacy and institution-led support for its effective and responsible use. In an effort to comprehend students’ experiences, requirements, and recommendations for overcoming AI-related gaps in academic settings, students’ experiences, requirements, and recommendations for AI integration have been analysed in this study, guided by a theoretical lens of the Jisc Digital Capability Framework. Adopting a qualitative inquiry, students’ experiences, requirements, and recommendations for AI integration have been elicited through students’ open-ended survey feedback to throw light onto students’ experiences, requirements, and recommendations for overcoming AI-related gaps in academic settings. As such, students’ experiences, requirements, and recommendations for AI integration have been analysed and discussed in line with key capabilities in the Jisc Framework, such as Information, Data, and Media Literacy; Digital Learning and Development; and Digital Identity and Well-being. Regarding requirements, respondents have emphasized a demand for organised workshops, tutorial guidance, responsible AI use guidance and fair access to AI tools. This study emphasises the urgent need to embed AI literacy into higher education curricula, develop institutional policies that foster ethical AI use, and equip students with the critical digital competencies necessary to navigate AI-enhanced learning environments.
