Perception of Faculty towards Character Building of University Students: A Case Study of Pakistan

Abstract

Character building is a cognitive and behavioural process of learning, adapting and assimilating the core ethical norms and civic values. Much research reveals that universities are paying less attention regarding the teaching of character development and youth is less practical regarding practicing values. The study therefore, aims to attempt in finding out the current scenario on character building at university level in Pakistan. 27 teaching staff of 9 faculties from university of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan had been selected for survey. Data was collected from a questionnaire consisting of three closed ended questions for quantitative data and through interviews for qualitative data. The research produced that although faculty is satisfied but overall University activities regarding Character Building of the students are undesirable. Only 13 departments out of 130 departments have their active character-building societies. The research shows that the most important reason for the lack of ethics among students is societal attitude and educational institutions are the most effective means of instilling morality in students. The research stressed on values education programs through which moral values can be developed among the students.
