Abstract

Modern times has not been able to steal away Assam’s affinity with nature and divinity and this has been strengthened with the impact of Mahapurusha Shrimanta Sankardeva, a vaishnavite saint’s teachings in the religious practices, prayer methods, cultural involvement of people. People world over, are in a quest of happiness and health. Physical, mental, spiritual and social health realms are talked about today in global forums. All these realms ensuring holistic health was in practice in Assam centuries ago. If one were to give a closer look at the prayer practices, the kirtana methods practiced today in entire Assam, one would be astonished as to how it stands perfect in the modern yardsticks ensuring holistic health. Despite modern day distractions, material magnificence, global influences we must hold on to the rich our region’s legacy. In modern times, everything that is evidence based is noteworthy and acceptable, we must highlight how scientific all our belief systems, practicing methods are. Right from the ‘prasad’ offered, prayer methods (kirtan), dance forms (satriya), social interactions (bhakat sang), service before self attitude (bhakat sewa), mutual respect to fellow human beings (bhakat) are scientific. Even India’s Indigenous health system like Ayurveda’s health ensuring principles in a way endorses the lifestyle of people in Assam. As we embrace modernity and usher in digital era, artificial intelligence and so on, we must be intelligent enough to hold on to our very scientific humane value system tighter. This paper highlights this perspective.
