Abstract
This study explores the pedagogical value of self-learning for high school students to improve their scores on the Translation Questions of the Joint College Entrance Exam (JCEE) by using three online checkers: Grammarly, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word. The Chinese-to-English Translation Questions consist of two questions but account for 24% of the non-multiple-choice section’s total score, making it valuable for students to master this part. While teachers typically review past test questions, they have limited time during class due to busy schedules. Thus, the study’s objective is to help students self-learn by identifying the most effective grammar checker using “researcher-generated mock answers.” These mock answers are based on guidelines from the College Entrance Examination Center (CEEC), which publishes common grammatical errors and marking criteria each year. The study is divided into two parts, analyzing mock answers from the 111th and 110th JCEE using the three online checkers. The goal is to identify the most efficient tool for high school students to enhance their performance independently.
