Bridging the Divide and Fostering Collaboration in Math Teaching

Abstract

According to Rasmussen et al. (2015), one of the key factures that contributes to success in the calculus sequence, is a comprehensive course coordination, including common assessment. This paper explores the implementation of common exams in a multivariable course at a small liberal arts college. In recent semesters, the school has encouraged common exams in freshman course in order to improve student mastery of course outcomes and to ensure consistency in standards. We share two contrasting experiences: a small-scale approach that illustrates the importance of clear communication and shared information, and a challenging implementation that puts forward several conditions that need to be met in order to make this successful. The insights from this experience may be useful for other departments or schools considering the adoption of common exams.
