Exploring Higher Education Students' Perceptions towards CHATGPT as a Learning Assistance Tool: A Revised Technology Acceptance Model

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, has significantly transformed educational experiences by providing students with immediate academic assistance. This study aims to investigate universiry students’ perceptions of ChatGPT as a learning assistance tool, focusing on key aspects such as ease of use, usefulness, satisfaction, limitations, and their behavioral intention to continue using the tool. Additionally, the research explores how socio-demographic factors-including gender, age, education level, and experience with ChatGPTaffect students’ perceptions. The study also examines the factors influencing students’ intention to continue using ChatGPT for academic purposes, with particular attention to ease of use, usefulness, and satisfaction. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, with a sample of 390 university students randomly selected from several universities in Indonesia. Data were collected using a survey instrument based on established models. The results indicate that students generally perceive ChatGPT positively even though students also identified several limitations, particularly regarding the reliability, accuracy, and consistency of the tool. The findings further reveal that experience with ChatGPT plays a central role in shaping students’ perceptions, particularly in terms of their behavioral intention to continue using the tool. Age was also found to influence both satisfaction and behavioral intention to use ChatGPT in the future. Notably, satisfaction emerged as the primary determinant influencing students’ behavioral intention to continue using the tool, with a strong positive correlation. These findings suggest that educators can boost engagement by integrating ChatGPT into learning environments and providing personalized support tailored to students’ age and experience.
