Abstract
The digitisation of museum collections presents both opportunities and challenges for institutions worldwide. This paper explores The Hockey Museum’s (THM) journey from a small national exhibition to an internationally recognised institution, emphasising the role of digital innovation in preserving fragile artefacts and expanding global reach. While virtual museums offer broader accessibility and enhanced storytelling, they also raise concerns about the loss of tangible interactions and ethical considerations in digital curation. Using THM as a case study, this paper looks at the options for digitising and collections of items, stories, and heavy archives and the ways we can approach this topic while looking at how other small museums have digitised, or not.
