The Changing Nature of Education: A Personal Perspective
Education has undergone significant transformations in recent years, driven by technological advancements, shifts in teaching methodologies, and global challenges. As a student and a teacher, I have witnessed these changes firsthand, particularly in integrating digital learning, project-based approaches, and real-world applications that make learning more engaging and practical.
As a student, I had the opportunity to study project management in civil engineering using a project-based approach, which allowed us to work on real-life scenarios, enhancing our problem-solving and decision-making skills. Similarly, the project-based methodology in water microbiology enabled us to apply theoretical knowledge to practical experiments and case studies. Most of my courses were designed around case studies, making learning more interactive and reflective of real-world challenges.
One of the most memorable experiences was in risk management, where we participated in a field application. As part of the training, we simulated an emergency by triggering a siren to signal a risk within the school. This exercise involved evacuating students and performing first aid, helping us understand emergency response procedures practically. Furthermore, we visited Wali's office in Rabat to observe how public tenders are managed. We learned to evaluate and score companies based on their technical, financial, and administrative files, giving us firsthand insight into decision-making processes in public administration.
As a professor, I strive to apply similar methods in my teaching. In Geographic Information Systems (GIS) courses, I alternate between lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and case studies, ensuring that students can connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications. This method aids them in developing both analytical and technical skills while fostering critical thinking.
These experiences highlight how education is shifting toward practical, applied learning that prepares students for professional challenges. While traditional teaching methods still have their place, integrating project-based learning, field applications, and case studies creates a more dynamic and effective educational experience. As a learner and an educator, I believe this evolution makes education more relevant, engaging, and impactful for future professionals.
