My research focuses on the application of linguistic analysis to social issues, notably the law and climate change. I try to demystify Critical Discourse Analysis and apply it to social problems, aiming to show how elite perspectives are privileged and presupposed, while alternative perspectives are marginalised, trivialised or simple absent. In the area of language and law I argue that judges and lawyers should spend less time on semantics and more on legal analysis. My concern with climate change is to make connections between solutions to global warming and solutions to other social problems. Climate activists need to offer an attractive alternative to mass consumption based on fossil fuels, and I want to use my linguistic expertise to help in this endeavour. I am currently working on a book about Noam Chomsky, whose political work is in many respects similar to my academic concerns.
