Guiding Students' Use of AI Platforms: A Challenge and an Opportunity

Artificial intelligence has become omnipresent in our daily lives, including in our students' learning practices. Tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly undeniably simplify their tasks by providing quick and often relevant solutions. However, this ease of access raises a fundamental question: How can we ensure that the primary goal of education—fostering understanding, critical analysis, and independent thinking—is not compromised?

We know that outright banning these tools is neither effective nor realistic. Instead, it is essential to integrate these platforms into our teaching approaches in a thoughtful and guided manner. Here are a few strategies to consider:

Encourage critical use: Teach students to evaluate AI-generated results, identifying their limitations and biases.
Promote a hybrid approach: Combine manual work and AI use to demonstrate where human input adds real value.
Emphasize justification: Ask students to explain and contextualize the answers or solutions they obtain through AI tools.
Yet, this raises several other questions:

How can we balance using AI platforms so that they remain support tools rather than crutches?
What approaches can we adopt to assess students’ skills without penalizing them for using these technologies?
How can we train educators to effectively guide their students in navigating this rapidly evolving landscape?
