Abstract

The impact of technology on health-care delivery continues to evolve in high-, middle-, and low-income countries. Community health workers (CHWs) play a pivotal role in healthcare infrastructures, particularly in many low- and middle-income countries. Some CHW roles, practices, and workflows have also been impacted by the integration of technology, particularly mobile technologies that lend themselves to traditional CHW scope of practice activities like on-site health education and care visits. This article explores the multifaceted role of technology in enhancing health promotion implemented by CHWs. The article delves into the most common uses for mobile health technology apps (m-health) in CHWs’ work and discusses the potential impacts of more advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). The article also highlights the challenges in implementing advanced technology like AI in community health work and presents questions for further research in community health and explainable AI.
