Exploring Teacher Perspectives on the Effectiveness of AI Too ...
Abstract
This qualitative study examines the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on student engagement in English language learning, specifically from the perspectives of experienced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educators. Through semi-structured interviews with ten practicing EFL teachers, this research investigates how AI-driven tools support individualized learning, enhance motivation, and facilitate language acquisition. Findings indicate that AI tools increase student engagement, with interactive feedback aiding in the development of developing personalized learning routes. However, educators also expressed concerns regarding equitable access, the digital divide, over-reliance on AI for grammar correction, and reduced human interaction in language learning. Ethical considerations raised include issues of anonymity, data privacy, and the reliability of AI-generated feedback. Despite these challenges, teachers showed optimism about AI’s role in education, viewing it as a valuable complement to traditional teaching methods rather than a replacement. This study underscores the potential of AI to enrich learning experiences by augmenting established teaching practices, while also highlighting the importance of balanced AI integration to retain the essential human elements of education. These insights contribute to a nuanced understanding of the strengths and limitations of AI in language learning, advocating for a balanced deployment that supports human-centered teaching.
