Evaluating the Role of Co-Living Spaces in Enhancing Resource Efficiency in Sustainable Urban Fabrics
Daniel Dasig, Jr.
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Co-living spaces or shared living arrangements have gained significant traction in recent years as a viable housing model in urban settings. The concept promises not only to address the growing housing crisis but also to promote sustainable living by enhancing resource efficiency. This study evaluates the role of co-living spaces in enhancing resource efficiency by examining key metrics related to energy and water consumption, waste management, and environmental sustainability. This study employed descriptive-correlational research design to measure and correlate resource efficiency in co-living spaces and traditional housing units. Data were collected from 10 co-living spaces and 10 traditional housing units located in major cities across the Philippines. The findings of this study highlight the potential of co-living spaces to enhance resource efficiency in urban environments. The significant reductions in energy and water consumption, as well as waste generation, demonstrate the viability of co-living as a sustainable housing model. The findings indicate that co-living spaces offer significant potential for enhancing resource efficiency in sustainable urban fabrics. The reduction in energy and water consumption, coupled with high occupancy rates and prevalent resource-sharing behaviors, underscores the viability of co-living as a sustainable housing model. Future research should continue to explore the long-term impacts of co-living spaces on urban sustainability and investigate ways to optimize these living arrangements for even greater resource efficiency. The results suggest that co-living spaces offer significant advantages in terms of resource efficiency, supporting the shift toward more sustainable urban development practices.

Techniques of Eclecticism
Wonseok Chae,
Holger Hoffmann
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper examines ‘eclecticism’ as a significant technique in contemporary architectural design. Future projects are expected to emerge from existing environments rather than starting from tabula rasa, driven by the scarcity of resources that necessitates reusing existing buildings. They carry cultural influences and narratives reflecting diverse histories. Thus, architectural design addresses sustainability through both technological advancements and cultural perspectives. In response to these demands, the authors have explored an approach to eclecticism grounded in specific architectural examples and analyzed through literature and inquiry. In the 21st century, architectural design often reconfigures formal languages from precedents, emphasizing synthesis over inventing entirely new languages. These methods provide not only practical solutions but also foster aesthetic innovations. Eclecticism merges diverse narratives to create new forms, which often reinterpret original meanings as fictional constructs. Eclecticism is both a doctrine defined by its rejection of adherence to a single model or system, instead borrowing from a range of diverse sources. In architecture, it combines fragments differing from mannerism’s historical focus, pluralism’s socio-political context, and appropriation’s ethical concerns. It has evolved with design techniques over time. In the 18th century, imitation blurred originals and copies. By the 19th century, neo-styles emerged to represent the bourgeoisie. The 20th century saw collage techniques layering materials from diverse contexts. Today, realism introduces deliberate misfits between reality and representation. Eclecticism integrates multi-authorship, blending diverse contexts into site-specific narratives. Once criticized for fakery or compromise, it is now embraced in contemporary architecture. This paper explores its methodologies, intentions, and implications.

Bloom's Embrace
Rebecca Midden
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study explores the design and implementation of “Bloom’s Embrace: A Wetland’s Journey,” a two-phase immersive installation that examines the relationship between natural and built environments. In its first phase, the project creates a spatial experience by situating large-scale untreated duck cloth panels partially submerged in wetland pools. These panels absorb biogeochemical processes over time, capturing ecological patterns- stains, textures, and colors that transform into visual narratives symbolizing the wetland’s purifying power. The installation invites visitors to move among the panels, immersing themselves in the interplay of light, shadow, time, texture, sound, color, and scale, fostering a deeper emotional and contemplative connection to the landscape. In its second phase, the panels are exhibited as monumental tapestries, functioning as metaphorical “landscape paintings” that expand the discourse around the invisible beneficial processes of wetlands and their vital role in ecological systems. Positioned at the intersection of environmental art, landscape architecture, and social innovation, this project fosters innovative approaches to design by demonstrating how ecological processes can inform spatial and architectural practices. “Bloom’s Embrace” encourages designers to draw inspiration from nature’s intelligence, offering a framework for creating spaces that harmonize poetic expression with ecological functionality and sustainability.

Pathways to Inclusive Growth
Carolina Ditan,
Lucila Magalong,
Daniel Dasig Jr
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The rapid urbanization in the Philippines has posed significant challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. As cities expand, the need for inclusive growth becomes paramount to ensure that urbanization benefits all sectors of society. Inclusive growth emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared by all segments of the population, particularly the marginalized and disadvantaged groups, and was considered critical for reducing poverty, enhancing social cohesion, and fostering long-term stability. This study utilized Sequential Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze pathways for achieving inclusive growth and sustainable urbanization in the Philippines. This research determined the key determinants and transformative strategies that can foster equitable urban development by integrating the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The SEM analysis reveals several pathways through which urbanization can promote inclusive growth: employment and income distribution significantly impact urban development; access to education, healthcare, and housing is crucial for enhancing social inclusion and improving quality of life in urban areas; and investment in infrastructure, including transportation, utilities, and digital connectivity, supports economic growth and social inclusion. Achieving inclusive growth and sustainable urbanization in the Philippines requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development. Integrated urban planning, participatory governance, inclusive housing policies, sustainable infrastructure development, and the creation of green and resilient cities are transformative strategies that can pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable urban future. By adopting these strategies, the Philippines can ensure that the benefits of urbanization are shared by all.

Systematic Review of Technical and Process Frameworks Integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Building Deconstruction
Chukwumaobi Ibe,
Md Mohataz Hossain,
Andreea Serbescu
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study evaluates the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) into building deconstruction processes to improve planning, execution, and material recovery, ultimately contributing to sustainable construction. A systematic review was conducted by examining academic databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar. A comprehensive set of keywords and Boolean operators were used to identify frameworks that incorporate BIM in deconstruction processes. Data were extracted and analysed thematically, supported by a quality assessment using a modified Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist. The review identified 48 frameworks that demonstrated BIM’s potential to optimize various aspects of deconstruction. Four key themes emerged: Materials Passports, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Integration, Reverse Logistics, and Automated Deconstruction. BIM was found to significantly improve material recovery efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance planning and coordination among project stakeholders. However, challenges related to the complexity of BIM implementation, as well as the need for comprehensive data integration, were noted. From a practical perspective, this study suggests that while BIM offers considerable benefits, its adoption in deconstruction requires overcoming challenges such as complexity, adequate training, and effective data management. The insights gained can help practitioners and industry stakeholders to implement BIM-based deconstruction strategies more efficiently. This review also contributes to the broader knowledge on BIM and deconstruction by providing a critical evaluation of existing frameworks, offering recommendations for both future research and practical applications.

Contradictory Investment in the Production of Urban Space - a Harveyan-Lefebvrian Understanding of Auckland’s Housing Affordability Issue
Maqsood Rezayee
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In Auckland, the dream of owning a house may now be entirely out of reach for some people as housing prices continue to be severely unaffordable. One of the key factors to which Auckland’s housing unaffordability is often attributed is the housing shortage. Through abductive/retroductive reasoning, I contend that rather than attributing Auckland's housing unaffordability solely to housing shortages, other factors that have not been adequately explored contribute to housing unaffordability. This research found that after shift toward neoliberalism, the housing price significantly increased in New Zealand; therefore, the alternative factor could be traced to the shift from Keynesian welfare economic policies to neoliberal planning policies. From the neo-Marxist point of view, the profound impact of changes in planning policies under neoliberalism is the main inherent contradiction of capitalism: exchange value versus use value. Harvey as neo- Marxist urban philosopher suggested that the main aim of housing provision in capitalist societies is to obtain exchange value rather than use value. Due to the dominant role of exchange value in the housing provision, access to affordable housing for an increasing segment of the population has become more difficult. I set this theory as the hypothesis of this research, and the main objective of this research is to test the validity of this hypothesis in the case of Auckland. To provide a complementary theoretical framework for analysing the contradiction between housing use value and exchange value, this research integrates Harvey’s theory of triad circuits of capital accumulation and Lefebvre's spatial triad theory.

How Integrated Project Delivery Influences Social Sustainability
Sara Rankohi
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Project contracting strategies and sustainability are fundamental mechanisms for successful project deliveries. In recent years, the construction industry scholars and professionals demonstrated interest in integrated project delivery (IPD), as a collaborative contracting strategy which integrates project stakeholders around common goals and objectives. While both IPD and sustainability have received tremendous attention from literature recently, the interplay between them is yet to be discovered. The goal of this paper is to investigate the links between integrative project delivery and social sustainability. To achieve this goal, a literature review has been carried out with a focus on integrated project delivery, considering the social pilar of sustainability. Based on the overall analysis of the results, the research clusters are extracted in three categories as below: horizontal, vertical, and longitudinal integration. In addition, an IPD governance-social sustainability framework is presented to guide future research in this field. Finally, this paper gathers the segments of knowledge about IPD and social sustainability and discuss how IPD aligns with social sustainability principles by creating value beyond the project itself, fostering trust, and prioritizing human well-being throughout the project lifecycle.

Using a Hospital Site for Healthy Placemaking
Jane Clossick
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The goal of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP, funded by Innovate UK) project described in this paper is to transform Newham University Hospital (NUH) in East London into a beacon of 'healthy placemaking'. Historically, NHS approach to estates management has been reactive, and over 1.6ha of NUH’s 13ha site is significantly underused. The opportunity to develop a masterplan has been overlooked; there are few examples of urban design approaches to health in the NHS. The hospital serves a diverse, deprived population with complex needs, served by sub-optimal services and there are several examples of relevant missed opportunities at NUH. In 2024 a new respiratory ward was constructed with beds directly overlooking a poorly utilised area of asphalt/car parking. By introducing and embedding a co-design process, the KTP Associate will develop a masterplan to guide capital expenditure on spatial development making NUH a better place to work/use, within a cohesive strategic vision for future growth; integrating preventative healthcare, and sustainability, whilst being adaptable to future changes. Programmatic activities bearing minimum cost, such as nature walks and rewilding, can have great impact. Effective healthy placemaking at NUH will lead to commercial impacts via a mixture of cost-savings due to workforce impacts, incoming grant and capital funding, and wider NHS impact. Successful embedding of expertise and cultural shift will mean that as and when capital funding emerges, a health-creating approach to design will be taken. A well-designed and health-oriented site will lead to improvements in staff recruitment/retention and will become a community asset.

Reexamining Public Urban Green Space Design
Eliane Schmid
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In 2004, Cranz and Boland announced the “Sustainable Park” era (102), marking a convergence of social and ecological concerns in public park development. Precursors of this concept can be found in 1970s Marseille and Hamburg reacting to climate protection demands via greening initiatives. The campaign “Milles Points Verts” [1000 green points] for Marseille aimed to green the city and raise environmental consciousness. Hamburg, the twin-city of Marseille, was inspired by this program and launched “Aktion Grünes Hamburg” [campaign for a green Hamburg]. Citizens in both cities were educated on green space importance and “proper” usage, as well as encouraged to participate in tree planting events. Yet, studying these programs reveals how they reinforced socio-spatial inequalities through planning and public education and we can thus recognize the potential and pitfalls of (sustainable) park development. Both initiatives demonstrate increased environmental awareness and citizen engagement attempts, while exposing how urban green space planning reflects and fosters social norms through e.g. limited accessibility and design strategies. By examining past initiatives, we can acquire valuable knowledge for future park planning that aligns with the call of this year’s TCE to think about “sharing practices and built structures within the city”. Creating more inclusive, ecologically sound, and socially equitable public urban green spaces requires active listening to and inclusion of communicated needs of actual users. This approach supports sustainable park construction both for the (resilient) community and the environment, thereby promoting ways of creating truly publicly accessible and shareable spaces within the city.
